It  can  be  a  frustrating  experience  when  the  doorbell  suddenly  stops  working  or making strange sounds. The good news is that  doorbell repair can be done by most homeowners. It does require the right tools and knowledge.

When it comes to door buzzer repair, there are four things that you need to consider. These are the button, transformer, wiring, and the chime. Below are the steps to track down the cause of the malfunction and how to fix it.

Inspecting and Repairing the Wiring

It is impossible to inspect the wiring completely when doing doorbell repair. Most of the wire is hidden inside walls. Some of the visible wire is the part that usually gets broken or loose. Inspecting the wiring will just take a couple of minutes. There might be exposed wire near the transformer or through the unfinished basement.

Doorbell wiring is composed of three or more thin wires that are found inside a plastic cover. You should look for portions where the plastic covering is damaged. You should also be on a lookout for pinched sections. There are some instances where the covering has to be sliced open to look inside it.

If you find a broken wire, the door buzzer repair solution is to strip both ends of the wire and rejoin them with wire connectors. There are instances where there is not enough slack in the wire for new connections. If that’s the case, add a short section between the broken ends. You can find 18-gauge wire in most home centers and hardware stores.

Doorbell Button Repair

There are times when you need to bypass the button when doing doorbell repair. This is one way to determine if the button is malfunctioning or not. Remove the doorbell button and then disconnect the wire from its terminal. Touch the detached wire to the other terminal. If the doorbell rings, then you need to replace the button. You can purchase one from hardware stores and home centers as well.

Inspecting the Chime

To check the chime, you will need a voltage tester. The chime is composed of small armature rods that strike metal tubes to make sound. It will not work properly if there is a loose wire, or the armature is stuck. To inspect the chime, remove the cover. Most covers are screwed in place or lifted off. Once the cover is off, check for loose wires.

For this doorbell repair step, you will need a low voltage tester. Place one of the tester probes to the common terminal, which is usually labeled as Trans or com. The other probe must touch the back or front door terminal while another person pushes the button. If the voltage tester lights up, then it means that he chime has power and the problem is caused by something else.

There are instances that the armature is too dirty that it can’t move. The door buzzer repair solution is to clean the armature with rubbing alcohol and try moving it. Then try pushing the button again. If the chime still doesn’t ring, it is time to call licensed professional experts to replace it.
